Preview page edits#314

The lack of ability to preview edits to published pages before publishing the changes is a major feature that puts me off using Kirby. How feasible is it to add this?

Right now, editors have to publish their edits before being able to see what they look like. For anything beyond simple text or image updates, this makes editing quite a nervy, anxious experience for clients!

Do you mean this idea? https://kirby.nolt.io/15

@Ahmet Bora No I meant just being able to open a preview version of the edited page in another tab before publishing.

To clarify, this is only an issue for edits to posts that have already been published. What I’d like to see is a ‘preview’ option next to the ‘open’ option. Right now when you click ‘open’ it doesn’t show your changes until they’re saved and published.

This is something we want to support in the future. With 3.6’s Fiber feature we will finally have the foundation to build “drafts of published pages”, which will then allow such a preview as well.

At the moment it’s impossible from a technical perspective as the changed content is only stored in localStorage of the editor, so the server cannot access it to render the preview.

@Hello I saw you also commented on https://kirby.nolt.io/152 - to me this idea seems like a duplicate of this other one and I’d argue to merge them

I agree. Once we have drafts for published pages, the preview is a really small step, so it makes sense to implement them together.

That makes sense. Thanks. Do you have any idea of the timescale for this?

3.6 (which will come out in fall) is definitely a requirement for it. Beyond that we don’t have a fixed priority plan yet.
